Drama

Your ideas, your way and supporting others to bring ideas to life. In this program, students of all abilities create and act in their own performance. Learning and skills development is paced to suit the students in a safe and supportive environment.

The experience of working on your own ideas and learning the skills to make it happen builds confidence and personal relationships as well as problem solving, communication and cooperation skills. It is a lot of fun too. The drama program consists of a year-long creative process that culminates in an end-of-year performance at the Karralyka Theatre, Ringwood.

Course Content and Structure

In term 1 the student’s focus on ensemble based skills such as awareness, group dynamics and self-confidence. In term 2 the students build performance skills and participate in theatre-based training including: physical movement, vocal projection and articulation, improvisation, stage combat, clowning and Alexander technique. These skills are not only beneficial in telling the amazing stories in the play; they are also valuable social and life skills. They also devise the performance piece that they will present at the end of the year.

In terms 3 and 4, the students develop their performance skills further, refining the script and rehearsing the play. The focus then turns to the public performance, bringing all the exciting elements of costume, lighting, sound and set design together. Regular visits to the theatre allow for a smooth transition into the performance space. The students perform their devised play twice (once during the day and once at night). Both performances are followed by a community forum which allows the audience to interact with the cast and crew. The year ends with a viewing of the performance footage and a DVD of the performance to take home to friends and family.
